In a recent press release, it was revealed that the upcoming 2016 Prius will come with exciting new improvements to the engine that will allow it to achieve "the highest fuel economy of any vehicle without a plug. Toyota's famous hybrid will feature a 1.8-liter VVT-I engine, capable of 40 percent thermal efficiency; an unprecedented figure. Overall, a 10 percent increase in MPG is expected, with an Eco model capable of an even greater improvement.

Redesigns of the transaxle and electric motor have resulted in a better power-to-weight ratio, and a significant reduction in friction-induced mechanical losses. Furthermore, an increase in the energy density of the new lithium-ion battery, allows for a smaller unit, which allows for increased cargo capacity.

In addition to efficiency increases, Toyota has taken significant measures to increase safety with an available Safety Sense package which includes features such as a pre-collision system, and a pedestrian detection system.
